How can I change video format on my digital camera?

I have a Canon G9 digital camera. whenever i take videos and download them to my computer, the files get saved as AVI. I cannot burn these to DVD so i want to know how i can change the format to Mpeg so i can burn them. Does anyone know how to do this?
