How do i change the video format?!!!?

i downloaded a video from limewire and it wont play in my windows media player or quick time, its an mp4 file, andi cant get it to play, and i dont know how to change the format, i even tried to put it through my ipod converter program that i use to change the videop formats so i can add them to my ipod, but the program wont even recognize the clip so i can add it. please help.How do i change the video format?!!!?download the latest vlc player from www.videolan.org.
